GS-IR reframes a Gaussian scene as something that should be relightable. Vanilla 3DGS bakes appearance into color coefficients, so a shiny object or shadowed region is captured as “what it looked like,” not as material plus illumination. GS-IR tries to decompose that appearance into geometry, BRDF-like material, and environment lighting.
The algorithm has to invent geometry cues that splats do not naturally provide. It derives normals through depth-based regularization and introduces a baking strategy for occlusion, because forward splatting does not trace visibility the way ray tracing does. These pieces let the model approximate physically based rendering while keeping Gaussian efficiency.
The paper is important because it exposes the gap between view synthesis and scene understanding. A splat that looks right from the training lighting is not necessarily useful for AR or product work. Inverse rendering methods like GS-IR push 3DGS toward assets that can be edited under new lights.
GS-IR asks whether a 3DGS scene can be decomposed into geometry, material, and lighting instead of only reproducing training views. That is a harder inverse-rendering problem: the same pixel color can be explained by albedo, illumination, surface orientation, or specular response. The paper keeps Gaussian splatting's efficient rendering but adds physically motivated factors.
The method augments Gaussians with attributes needed for relighting, including surface normals and material-related terms. Rendering then includes an illumination model rather than only spherical-harmonic view-dependent color. Training uses photometric supervision plus regularizers so the decomposition does not become arbitrary.
The core algorithmic tension is identifiability. Standard 3DGS can hide lighting effects inside color coefficients; inverse rendering must prevent that shortcut. GS-IR therefore needs constraints that make normals smooth enough, albedo stable enough, and illumination plausible enough to support novel lighting.
Its importance is in moving splats from appearance capture toward editable appearance understanding. It is not as physically complete as a full path tracer or calibrated BRDF pipeline, but it gives a practical 3DGS route for relighting and material-aware editing. Users should read it as a first step toward separating what the object is from how it was lit during capture.
